OXFORD Harlequins have already settled into life at Horspath Sports Ground, but this weekend marks the official unveiling of their new headquarters.

The South West 1 East side have taken to the RFU-funded artificial surface like a duck to water in winning their opening two home games.

But Saturday’s fixture against Wimborne will have more significance as their new base will be officially declared open.

The ceremony will mark the culmination of a great deal of hard work behind the scenes to make the project a reality, with Quins moving across from Marston Ferry Road to be the custodians of a £1million development open to all teams in the county.

“This is a great addition to the local community and further enhances the opportunities for Oxford Harlequins RFC to enjoy a great facility on our home ground,” said chairman Neil Hopper.

“The whole project has been in the making for the last 12 months.

“It has created a real buzz around the club from all age groups, with local schools and other community clubs looking forward to coming down to make use of this amazing playing surface.”

In addition to the £800,000 pitch, Quins also raised £200,000 to redevelop the existing clubhouse and changing rooms.

Their second XV will also be in action on an adjacent pitch when they face Beaconsfield 2nd in BB&O Division 2.

Rob Walsh, RFU council member for Oxon, will open the facility, with Ben Ryan, who coached Fiji to sevens gold at the Rio Olympics in 2016, also in attendance.

Steve Grainger, the RFU’s rugby development director, said: “We hope the local community will embrace the new AGP and take advantage of the additional opportunities it provides people to play year-round rugby.

“Since launching our first sites in January 2017, we have seen local clubs, schools and teams from across the local areas all embracing the opportunity to play on the world-class facilities without weather, darkness or lack of pitch access limiting their ability to enjoy this great game.”

County president Jenny Bosley said: “The pitch is here for the use of the county and its clubs. You can even book half a pitch if you would like to.”
