Oxford City stayed fifth in Vanarama National League South after Chippenham Town stopped them clinching a play-off spot.

Alex Bray scored the only goal two minutes after half-time, but a defeat for Eastbourne Borough meant Ross Jenkins’ side kept their place in the table.

Joe Iaciofano thought he had given City the lead from a corner seven minutes in, but the ball took a flick off a player in an offside position.

Chippenham gained the ascendency after that as a series of chances culminated in Alefe Santos forcing Ben Dudzinski into an excellent save with a dipping attempt from outside the penalty area.

The hosts were lucky to go in level, though, after a George Harmon cross fell perfectly for Elliot Benyon on the volley, but the forward’s effort crashed off the crossbar.

The only goal came straight after half-time, as former Wales youth international Bray fired past Dudzinski following an excellent solo run.

Iaciofano went close shortly after with a header that looped just over the bar.

Another speculative effort from Santos crashed off the woodwork late on, but the home side did not need a second goal to ensure victory.

City need one point to secure a play-off place.

Banbury United had extra reason to celebrate their 2-1 home win over Alvechurch.

The Puritans were presented with the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central trophy after the victory, which took them to 99 points with one game left.

Banbury were behind at the break, but Jack Stevens equalised from the penalty spot and Chris Wreh completed the turnaround 15 minutes from time.

Meanwhile, North Leigh’s 3-0 win over Didcot Town moved the Millers into the Division 1 Central play-off places ahead of the final day of the season.

Roger James, Slavi Spasov and Jordan Alves scored as Eddie Odhiambo’s men leapfrogged Welwyn Garden City, who drew 1-1 with Barton Rovers.

Wantage Town claimed a second successive home win in the other Oxfordshire derby.

Jamal Branker and Callum Crook scored for the Alfredians in their 2-1 victory over Kidlington, who went ahead through Rhys Wells.

Ryan Blake equalised four minutes from time as Thame United claimed a 1-1 draw at high-flying AFC Dunstable.
