KARL Robinson says Oxford United’s goalscoring exploits in 2021 make him ‘incredibly proud’.

Matty Taylor’s strike at Sunderland on Saturday was the 100th time the U’s have found the net in the calendar year – putting them alongside an illustrious trio.

Manchester City (143), Liverpool (106) and Manchester United (102) are the only other sides to hit three figures in 2021, with Sunderland just behind on 99.

Robinson playfully adopted a chant that Ipswich Town fans aimed at United in their 0-0 draw at Portman Road last month, but added a more serious point.

“Boring, boring Oxford, is that?,” the U’s head coach joked.

“I think so many people forget how well this football club’s done over the last two years.

“If you look at the cold facts, we’ve over-achieved for two years now and we continue to do that.

“We’re incredibly proud of the goals that we score and I bet it’s very well spread out as well. We’re not one-dimensional.

“If the strikers aren’t scoring we feel very comfortable that other people will chip in, because we have our style.”

A total of 23 U’s players have contributed to the century, plus two own goals, with only Taylor (20) and James Henry (ten) in double figures.

United were scheduled to train at the later time of 4.30pm today, before heading north this evening for tomorrow’s trip to Doncaster Rovers.

It is designed to maximise recovery, with the U’s in the middle of three away games in seven days.

Robinson added: “The travelling is always difficult, staying in different beds.

“It sounds like a great lifestyle, but it’s not something we enjoy doing. It’s part of the industry that we’re in.”
