ANDY Whing felt the 4-0 scoreline reflected harshly on Banbury United's performance against Barrow.

The Puritans were targeting a shock Emirates FA Cup win over a side who play three levels above them in Sky Bet League Two.

But Josh Gordon and Offrande Zanzala struck early in each half for Barrow, before Ollie Banks and Jordan Stevens scored late on.

It saw Banbury’s Cup run end at the first round for the second successive campaign, after reaching that stage for just the sixth time in the club’s history.

Whing’s side had not lost since bowing out to Canvey Island in last season’s competition and the manager was frustrated to see their 19-match unbeaten run come to an end.

He said: “I’m not being arrogant but we haven’t been used to losing, so it’s tough.

“It’s taken a League Two side to do that.

“I’m really disappointed with the goals we’ve conceded, because we haven’t been like that this season at all.

“I thought we were outstanding for the last 15 minutes of the first half and the first 15 minutes of the second half.

“We’ve put a League Two team on the back foot.

“That’s not a drubbing. It’s three mistakes, it’s not a 4-0 game.

“We played some good stuff but nothing really fell for us, I don’t think we were at our best going forward.

“It’s unfortunate, but we can take a lot of positives.”

It was nonetheless a great occasion at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium, as a sell-out crowd created a great atmosphere in front of the ITV cameras.

Whing was disappointed his side could not give their fans something to cheer, but thought they more than played their part.

He said: “These are the occasions I’m here for.

“You miss being in the dressing room for big games.

“It was outstanding, 2,500 here and you could hear them.

“I’m gutted we conceded quite early which dampened the mood a little bit, but they were fantastic until the final whistle.”
