CAMERON Brannagan hopes his change of role continues to reap rewards.

Oxford United’s No 8 is playing higher up the pitch this season, having been deployed deeper after returning from an eye infection at the start of the year.

Brannagan’s midweek goal against Shrewsbury Town took his tally to three for the campaign, beating his total for 2020/21, while he has been among the U’s top performers.

The 25-year-old said: “I feel like I’m a lot more influential when I’m playing higher.

“I enjoy that a lot more, because I can press high and contribute to goals.

“I was a bit frustrated on Tuesday, I should have had more than one.

“I just need to keep getting in those positions and the more I play there, the more of a habit it’ll become.

“Hopefully the net will keep rippling.”

Brannagan has been reunited with fellow ex-Liverpool youngster Herbie Kane in midfield, thanks to the Barnsley loanee’s arrival in August.

He said: “He’s a great kid. I’ve known him for quite a few years now, so having him in the building is good.

“He understands me, I understand him. It’s great to have him here.”
