ALEX MacDonald reflected on his ‘fantastic’ spell at Oxford United ahead of Gillingham’s visit to the Kassam Stadium.

The winger packed plenty of success into his two years at the U’s, who he joined in early 2015.

MacDonald helped United gain promotion from Sky Bet League Two in 2016, featured in that year’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley and played in several cup upsets.

The former Scotland Under 21 international made 97 appearances, scoring 12 goals, before leaving in January 2017.

But his last visit to Grenoble Road was not a happy experience, as United fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in April and effectively end Gillingham’s Sky Bet League One play-off hopes.

The Kent side return to Oxfordshire tomorrow and MacDonald expects a difficult afternoon.

He told Gillingham’s official website: “Personally, I have a lot of great memories from that stadium, but for us last year, that’s where our play-off dreams ended.

“I had two fantastic years there and we had a lot of success; Wembley days out, promotions, cup runs - we ticked every box.

“They are a very good technical team; a passing team.

“They have a fantastic squad of players and a fantastic manager.

“It’s going to be a really tough task, but hopefully we can go there and get a positive result.”

Both sides were hunting a play-off place when they met in April, with United eventually finishing sixth and Gillingham tenth.

Tomorrow’s game sees 15th host 19th, but MacDonald feels the Kent side can worry the U's.

The 31-year-old added: “We have done our homework and we will be looking to hurt them.

“We are a very good team and are capable of creating problems.

“We need to get on the front foot and take the game to them.”
