FORMER Oxford United goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell is on standby to play for Northampton Town tomorrow.

The 26-year-old came in to The Cobblers line-up for Tuesday’s Papa John’s Trophy third round tie against MK Dons after Steve Arnold injured himself warming up.

Mitchell, who spent the first half of the 2018/19 season on loan at United, was unable to prevent his side falling to a 2-0 defeat.

But he could be the man responsible for thwarting the U’s in tomorrow’s Sky Bet League One clash.

Boss Keith Curle told the Northampton Chronicle: “With Steve Arnold, his back seized up and as you can imagine for a goalkeeper, with their movements and dynamics, we needed to be careful and we didn’t want to take the risk.

“It came 30 minutes before kick-off so that was a little bit of a disruption, but Mitch came in and did well.

“He didn’t have much chance with the goals.”

Northampton yesterday completed the loan signings of Mickel Miller and Ryan Edmondson, who have signed for the rest of the campaign from Rotherham United and Leeds United respectively.

But they may be without experienced centre back Alan Sheehan, who is struggling with a muscle injury.

Tomorrow’s hosts have lost just two of the ten games the 34-year-old has started this season, but Curle admitted he was a doubt.

“Alan has had a slight reaction to a muscle that we’ve been nursing,” said Curle.

“He’s trained with it and rested it.

“It’s just a case of getting that balance right, but he’s an experienced player that wants to play.”
