KARL Robinson is looking to add to his attacking options among the players available as free agents.

The head coach has to decide quickly which members of his current squad will be cut to make room.

The deadline for EFL clubs to register their 22-man squads for the first half of the season is today.

Mide Shodipo’s loan signing on deadline day meant the U’s now have 22 players who count under the regulations, which have been brought in this season alongside the salary cap.

Anyone who was under 21 on January 1 this year does not count.

But after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Peterborough United, which saw the side slump to the bottom of the Sky Bet League One table, head coach Robinson revealed he still wanted to strengthen.

The only players available now outside of the transfer window are free agents.

They do not have to be signed before the cut-off, but there would have to be a slot kept open.

Robinson said: “I know what I want to do.

“There’s a lot of things I still want to do and I think it’s important it happens over the next 24 hours.

“I still think I need another wide player, or one who can play off the top.

“Then one of the players could go out on loan.”

He added: “People talk about (needing to sign) centre backs, but I think Sam Long has done really well.

“Mous (John Mousinho) trained with the group (on Monday) so he’s not too far away now, which is good news.

“Michael Elechi is doing really well.

“There’s a lot of development left in him, so you don’t want to block that pathway.”

If United did not go on to sign anyone, the contracted player within their squad who had been cut could be added at any time – but they could not feature for the club while they were not on the list.
