MATTY Taylor was delighted to see Oxford United's game plan work to devastating effect at Southend United.

The striker scored twice in the 4-0 win, with James Henry and Dan Agyei netting the other goals as the U's rose to sixth in Sky Bet League One.

Taylor first found the net after just 53 seconds, when he pounced on a loose pass from Shrimpers defender Richard Taylor.

Henry's effort also came after he won the ball high up the pitch and his teammate was happy to see United's plan come to fruition.

He said: "We're ready from minute one and they'll obviously be very disappointed.

"They've probably worked on how they're going to play for ten days and then they'll do that in the first minute.

"We want to press, but it was kind of about setting traps and letting them have the ball.

"We were hoping they would overplay and that's what's happened for the first two goals."

United were in control at half-time, but the hosts enjoyed a good spell in the second half where they threatened to find a way back into the game.

Taylor's 85th-minute strike made the points safe, but he admitted the display could have been better.

He said: "It wasn't the best of performances but we got the job done.

"I'll take not playing too well and winning 4-0 every week.

"You just need to grind out as many results as you can, especially away from home."

The win was United's first victory at Roots Hall since 2003 and stretched the U's unbeaten run to 15 games in all competitions.

The one downside was a groin injury to Shandon Baptiste in the warm-up, which saw the midfielder replaced by Anthony Forde.

But boss Karl Robinson said Baptiste's injury was not a worry and was a result of extra time on the training pitch.

He said: "It's not bad. He just did a bit of extra shooting with me yesterday and felt stiff.

"He maybe did a bit too much and I take responsibility for that."
