Ahead of each of United's games this season, we are looking back at memorable matches against their next opponents.

November 7, 1992: Southend United 0, Oxford United 3

TWO-goal hero John Durnin was delighted to spearhead Oxford United’s victory at Southend United.

The Liverpudlian returned to the centre of the U’s attack at Roots Hall and inspired a comfortable triumph, with fellow forward David Penney also on target.

After spending the early part of the season on the left flank, Durnin revealed he was relishing being United’s middle man.

He said: “I’ve only played three games in the middle.

“But I scored last Tuesday (against Portsmouth) and two more here, just by getting in the six yard box.

“I was brought to the club to score goals and that’s my game.”

United could have won by more as they turned in their most complete away performance of the season.

The striking duo of Durnin and Penney combined almost telepathically, with the U’s making it eight goals in two games following the 5-5 draw against Portsmouth four days earlier.

The win also stretched United’s unbeaten run in Division One to seven games.

Manager Brian Horton was pleased to see a response from his players after the ten-goal thriller.

He said: “I had a go at three or four of them and they have reacted like men.”
