JAMIE Mackie is relieved the threat of a suspension has now been removed after he stayed out of the referee’s notebook at Rochdale.

The forward has picked up nine yellow cards in Sky Bet League One this season.

A tenth triggers a two-game ban – as happened with Cameron Brannagan last month – but it only applies up to the 37th league fixture of the campaign.

Having walked the disciplinary tightrope for his last five appearances, Mackie will now only receive a ban if he reaches 15 cautions for the campaign.

The 33-year-old said: “Obviously that’s a big thing.

“For the squad we need everyone to be available for selection.

“Any silly bookings (at Rochdale) would have been criminal for me.”

Mackie’s physical style means he can attract attention from referees.

But while he felt his general play had not suffered amid the danger of suspension, it had hampered his ability to break up the game – which can now be restored from tomorrow’s home clash with Bradford City.

He said: “I only know one way to play, but at the same time you can’t do anything stupid.

“Some yellow cards I’ve got this season have been to break up play and manage the game for the team and I’ve taken the booking.

“I just couldn’t do that this week, but I’ve got through it.”
