GAVIN Whyte remains a doubt for Oxford United’s visit to Accrington Stanley tomorrow while his head injury is assessed.

The winger sustained a cut in the heavy collision which forced him off late in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Peterborough United.

As of this morning the U’s were still unsure whether it would rule Whyte out of the crunch Sky Bet League One clash at Stanley tomorrow.

U’s boss Karl Robinson said: “Gav’s still got a headache. The cut is still relatively big, so we’ll have to wait and see.

“He wasn’t unconscious (following the challenge), but concussion doesn’t mean you have to be knocked out.

“There are protocols in place and we have to first and foremost rule out concussion. Then we have to see if the cut is sufficient to see if he can be wrapped up.”

Mark Sykes, who was left out of Saturday’s game due to a knee problem, trained yesterday and is expected to travel.

United are heading north tomorrow as part of a change to their routine in a week where they are also away at Blackpool on Saturday.

Instead of staying over the night before the midweek game, they will remain in the north west after the Accrington game and hope to train at Liverpool’s academy on Wednesday.

Robinson said: “We’ll train up there on Wednesday and come back. They can recover on Thursday and then we’ll train back up north on Friday.

“The two most natural forms of recovery that people would pay millions for is sleep and sun.

“The sun is out of my control, but we can certainly control the sleep. If you look at the top level, a lot of teams stay over after the game.

“It‘s something a bit different and maybe isn’t looked at in this level as much.

“If you go up on Monday it’s a long night for the players and then a long day on Tuesday.”
