OXFORD United’s youngsters produced a sensational display to beat Premier League Burnley in the FA Youth Cup.

The U’s pulled off a remarkable 3-2 penalty shoot-out victory at Turf Moor last night, after the third-round tie finished 1-1 after extra time.

They now host either Bournemouth or Mansfield in the next round.

After falling behind to an early Michael Fowler strike, the U’s levelled six minutes from time through Ryan Crooks.

The hosts were already down to ten men, and were then reduced to nine men in extra time when Edon Pruti was sent off for handling on the line, presenting the U’s with a penalty.

But Kyran Lofthouses’s spot-kick was saved by Kai Calderbank-Park.

With neither side able to find a winner, the game went to penalties.

And it was United keeper Max Evans who proved the hero, saving twice in the shoot-out.

Youth team boss Leon Blackmore-Such was understandably thrilled.

“I am extremely proud of the way we fought back from going a goal down so early,” he said.

“I thought we were the better team for most of the game after that and to beat a Premier League team is a fantastic achievement for all involved.”

Ironically, things started badly for Evans when he got caught dwelling on the ball and Fowler charged down his clearance to give Burnley the lead.

Slavi Spasov, twice, and Owen James went close to an equaliser as United dominated.

But they had to wait until the 86th minute to get their reward.

A long throw into the box was not cleared and after a Lofthouse flick, Crooks fired home.

As the United player tried to retrieve the ball, Burnley defender Bobby Thomas took exception and pushed him to the ground and was sent off.

Spasov almost won it for United, his header dropping inches wide of the target, before the same player fired wide in the second minute of injury time.

Tired legs meant extra time did not hit the same heights.

But there was still plenty of incident, with United handed a glorious chance to win the game in the 109th minute.

Pruti’s red card gave Lofthouse the opportunity to be United’s hero, but Calderbank-Park saved the day for Burnley.

The U’s started poorly in the shoot-out, the hosts going ahead and substitute Jack Stevens firing over the bar.

Evans then denied Matty Rains, Freddie Niblett equalised but Kian Yari made it 2-1.

Crooks levelled and then Michael Fowler shot wide.

Michael Elechi put Oxford ahead and when Evans saved from Ethan Kershaw, the U’s were through.
