Mourners packed a village church to pay their respects to a popular businessman.

Friends, family, work colleagues and villagers filed into St Augustine's Church in East Hendred, near Wantage, for the funeral of millionaire David McDowell.

Mr McDowell, who owned the Grove-based Aasvogel skip hire and recycling company was a well-known figure in the Wantage area. He was killed after his articulated skip-truck overturned on the A420, near Faringdon, last week.

A female passenger, Samantha Gibbs, 33, of Kempsford, Gloucestershire, was also killed in the accident.

Mr McDowell, a 53-year-old father of two, of Newbury Road, East Hendred, owned a helicopter, and was a well-known racing fan and racehorse owner.

He was buried in the village churchyard.

The rector of East Hendred, the Rev Ernest Adley, said: "David will be missed locally by many people. He will be fondly remembered as someone who did a lot of good and for what he did for local people and the village. He had a desire to help the local community.

"People were shocked when he died, and the intention of having a funeral and being buried in the village was for local people to pay their respects."
