Oxfordshire has been named the fourth "greenest" region in the UK by a recent study.

The results, collected by GO Outdoors, produced a ranking of the regions with the highest average tree coverage as part of their investigation into the country's wellness hotspots.

Berkshire and Hampshire topped the chart, jointly boasting 21 per cent tree coverage and offering abundant access to natural and green spaces.

In third place was West Sussex, with tree coverage of 20 per cent.

Parts of the South Downs National Park are in West Sussex and the region is also home to popular attractions such as Tilgate Park, Hotham Park, and the coastal Mewsbrook Park.

Sharing fourth place with Oxfordshire were Surrey, London and East Sussex, each having 19 per cent average tree coverage.

All four locales are situated in Southern England, suggesting a greener south.

The other regions to make the top 10 were Hertfordshire and Wiltshire which were tied for eighth, and Kent, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, and Greater Manchester, which were all tied in tenth.

Beyond tree coverage, the study outlined other wellness factors.

Gloucestershire came out ahead as the best destination for spa retreats, while Greater London proved top for its quantity of gyms.

Powys was highlighted for its air quality, which was deemed the best in the UK.
