The final series of Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour could be screened on ITV before the end of the year.

No transmission date has yet been confirmed but an autumn screening of the final three episodes is a possibility.

Fans were shocked earlier this week when it was announced that series 9 of the popular detective drama would be the last.

Abigail Thaw, the daughter of John Thaw who played Inspector Morse in the original ITV series, has appeared in Endeavour since the 2012 pilot.

She tweeted: "But what a ride!" after the heartbreak emoji in response to the announcement.

Actors including Shaun Evans, who stars as Endeavour alongside Roger Allam as DCI Fred Thursday, were on location in Christ Church Meadow, and in Merton Street and New College Lane.

Some scenes were also filmed inside an Oxford college.

In a statement, ITV said: "After 10 phenomenally successful years, producers Mammoth Screen, and screenwriter Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam have mutually decided to bring the internationally renowned Endeavour to a close, and the series currently filming in Oxford will be the last.

"ITV’s drama commissioning team respectfully accepts this creative decision and would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone associated with Endeavour who have made the drama such a well loved part of the UK’s drama landscape.

Oxford Mail:

"ITV would particularly like to thank Damien Timmer, Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam who have created television history following in the footsteps of Morse’s acclaimed creator, the late, great, Colin Dexter and the much missed John Thaw."

Since filming began for ITV’s Inspector Morse episodes in the late 1980s, film crews for Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavour have been a familiar sight on the streets of Oxford.

Executive producer Damien Timmer said on behalf of producers, Mammoth Screen: "Endeavour has been a real labour of love for all of us, and we salute Russell Lewis for his extraordinary achievement in chronicling Endeavour Morse’s coming of age across 72 hours of TV.

Oxford Mail:

"Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us!

"We’d like to thank Shaun and Roger and all the other members of the Endeavour family on and off screen, and to the show’s fans both in the UK and abroad."

The Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavour TV series were all based on the detective novels of Oxford author Colin Dexter, who died in 2017.
