LIAM Gilbert is eyeing the runners up slot as Oxford United Women’s season draws to a close this weekend.

United travel to Gillingham on Sunday, following a thrilling 3-3 draw at champions Southampton on Wednesday.

Going into the weekend fixture, the U’s are one point behind second placed Ipswich Town.

United won 1-0 away against Ipswich last weekend, Merrick Will scoring the only goal of the game.

Both sides, plus Southampton, have been embroiled in a battle for top spot in National League Southern Premier throughout the season.

Gilbert said: “We’d love to finish as runners up. It has been a terrific fight for the title and Southampton proved the most consistent team over the course of the season.

“It’s out of our hands now but we can still take second place and in all likelihood we have to win our final game to have any chance.

“So we will do what we always do – prepare thoroughly, make sure we are up for the challenge and play with the same team spirit that has got us this far.”

Gillingham, in sixth, beat Cardiff 2-1 last time out, ending a winless run of three matches.

United’s rivals for the runners up place, Ipswich, make the journey to seventh placed Portsmouth.
