Traffic has now been released on the M40 near Banbury after a car stopped in the middle lane.
National Highways tweeted that the road was blocked southbound between junction 12 at Gaydon and junction 11 at Banbury following "a single vehicle collision".
The tweet added that emergency services were on their way.
However, an eyewitness, who was about three cars back, told the Oxford Mail: "It appeared not to be a crash, just one white car in the middle that had broken down.
