Enjoying a pint in a beer garden is an absolute British staple in the summertime.
As the chilly autumn weather draws in, there are only a few days left to enjoy Oxford's beer garden before it becomes too cold to sit outside.
Unless, of course, a pub has installed glorious heat lamps in their garden – then its cheers all year round!
Oxford has a huge amount of pubs with beer gardens worthy of attention but here are just some we think you should visit while the sun is still shining.
The best beer gardens in Oxford (in no particular order):
The Rose and Crown
North Parade Avenue, Oxford, OX2 6LX
The Rose and Crown is a historical pub dating back to 1836 but it was not given its name until 1867. The land on which it was built was originally farmland owned by St. John’s College.
The pub serves a variety of traditional British food, as well as Sunday roasts.
Head of the River
St Aldate’s, Oxford OX1 4LB
Another pub set alongside the river on what was once known as St Aldate’s Yard.
It is a great spot which offers brilliant views of the river, allowing you to watch the world go by.
The pub was originally warehouse before being converted into a pub and it actually got its name after a competition ran in the Oxford Mail. There were 2,700 entries in the naming contest and the winner, Lewis Fisher, won a gallon of whisky.
The Fishes
North Hinksey Village, Oxford, OX2 0NA
Describing itself as a ‘hidden gem’ this pub has a huge garden which gives you lots (and lots) and options of where to sit. The pub is set in a Victorian building amongst acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream.
Their food menu is extremely varied with both traditional grub and more adventurous meals on offer.
The Jolly Farmers
20 Paradise Street, Oxford, OX1 1LD
One of the oldest LGBTQ+ pubs in the UK, this small venue is the heart of Oxford.
The beer garden offers you a central spot to meet up with friends and enjoy a pint in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
The Trout Inn
195 Godstow Road, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX2 8PN
This 17th century pub sits right on the River Thames in Lower Wolvercote, giving you some phenomenal scenery and great photo opportunities (if you are so inclined).
The Trout Inn is a stylish country pub which is perfect for both warm sunny days and a beer after an autumnal country walk. It also has a long history which links to historical figures such as Lewis Carroll and King Henry II.
The White Hart
12 St Andrews Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 9DL
The White Hart is another historic watering hole dating back to the 16th century and was a favourite destination for Oxford academics wishing to take a walk into the country.
The pub is passionate about serving good beer and has been listed in the Good Beer Guide for seven consecutive years as well as being awarded the Oxford CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2014 and 2017.
The Isis River Farmhouse
Haystacks Corner, The Towing Path, Iffley Lock, Oxford OX4 4EL
The Isis River Farmhouse is a riverside pub which is full of character, it has lovely views with a large garden for you to enjoy yourself in.
It is an idyllic spot which also boasts open fires in the winter so you CAN enjoy a pint in the cold weather!
