OXFORD United Women were edged out by Wolves in their first pre-season friendly.

The U’s, who announced the signing of midfielder Beth Lumsden from Charlton Athletic before the game, had a mountain to climb after going in at half-time 2-0 down.

They pulled a goal back three minutes after the restart through Daisy McLachlan, but could not find a leveller at Court Place Farm.

Lumsden went straight into the starting line-up as United faced a fellow FA Women’s National League side, albeit one from the northern division.

Sarah King and Jade Grove, who arrived earlier in the week, were also in the XI.

Any hopes that the new signings would give the U’s a lift on the field were quickly hit, Wolves taking just five minutes to go ahead.

United kept their heads up and contributed to an entertaining affair, Lumsden forcing the visiting goalkeeper into a save midway through the half.

They had plenty of possession, but Wolves struck with a killer second four minutes before the break.

United started brightly after the restart and McLachlan halved the deficit with a goal of her own making.

The winger won the ball on the edge of the box and advanced to fire home.

Another new signing, Molly Childerhouse, made her debut off the bench just after the hour mark, before Kayleigh Hines and Cheryl Williams went close in the latter stages.
