POLL: Did you clap for Captain Tom last night?

The 100-year-old World War Two veteran, who raised nearly £33 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden, passed away on Tuesday from pneumonia after testing positive for coronavirus. 

After some confusion about when the clap would take place, Prime Minister Boris Johnson encouraged the nation to stand on their doorsteps and make some noise at 6pm.

It comes after hundreds of people cheered on our NHS workers on the frontline during the first lockdown.

On Facebook, we asked our readers if they were joining in. 

Wendy Plowman said: "Yes definitely a few neighbours too and heard some fireworks."

Becca Collacott added: "I was, didn’t hear many though (Caldecott Road area Abingdon) hopefully they’ll be more Friday."

However, some people said they had no idea the clap was meant to happen last night.

I am so sorry that many did not know about this due to confused times and dates or had come home from work and not known - also those that decided it was a clap for Boris rather than Sir Tom and decided not to - words fail me. RIP Captain Sir Tom Moore - with respect.

Writing on Facebook, Lesley Hawksworth said: "Sadly no, cos until just a few minutes ago I knew nothing about it." 

Heidi Kerry added: "Same, I've seen a few different days? One is Sunday 7th?"
