A VW driver who gave police another man’s name after they stopped him is expected to learn his fate next week.
Kevin Kiarie, 26, gave a schoolfriend’s name as police wrestled with him after stopping him behind the wheel of a VW Golf on October 19 last year.
Appearing before Swindon Crown Court on Thursday, Kiarie, of Bassett Road, Oxford, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, possession of cannabis, careless driving and driving without a licence or insurance.
Judge Peter Crabtree asked prosecutor Lucie Stoker for further details of a 2013 offence and whether police had spoken to the man whose name Kiarie gave at the roadside.
The case was adjourned to Wednesday, December 2. Kiarie was granted bail by Judge Crabtree.
Perverting the course of justice is a common law offence and so carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Punishment varies widely. There are no sentencing guidelines.
