AN EVENT will be held to mark Remembrance Sunday in Highworth - but the Christmas lights ceremony has been cancelled.

St Michael's Church will hold an invitation-only service and wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday November 8.

There will be up to 50 people allowed inside the church and the service will be livestreamed so that anyone who cannot attend can still watch from their homes.

The usual remembrance parade through Highworth will not go ahead.

Coun Ken Saunders has volunteered to carry the Town Council standard during the ceremony. The council's event safety advisory group will suggest suitable precautions.

The town council has, "with great regret", cancelled this year's Christmas lights switch-on ceremony which is usually held around the Podium on the High Street.

The council considered that it would be impossible to ensure that social distancing is maintained during the event, which usually draws a large crowd.
