OSWESTRY Town Council will ask for more details from the trustees of the Memorial Hall, in English Walls, before progressing a grant application.

In a submission to the town council at last Wednesday’s full meeting, Erica Moss – on behalf of trustees of the hall – requested a grant of £5,000 to help them open their doors as soon as possible.

The hall hosts a number of events throughout its rooms, and the trustees have spent their own money on making the on-site flat ready for renting again.

However, many councillors had a lukewarm reaction to their appeal, believing that if they have been able to afford some work themselves, then they were not in the need of the financial support from the council.

But Councillor Chris Schofield proposed that town clerk Arren Roberts met with the trustees to bring more information on how they intend to use the money and in how much need of they are.

Councillors passed the motion and a meeting will now be arranged.

Meanwhile, councillors acknowledged the report into potential changes at Central Car Park.

The meeting started with a resident – Peter Lloyd – asking what the council can do to support other residents in the area.

He said that despite efforts to stop anti-social behaviour in the car park, joyriding was still happening.

Mr Lloyd added: “It’s been affecting local residents mental health and while police have been active, they have not been able to stop it.”

Meanwhile, Oswestry town councillors have backed a motion by Councillor Olly Rose to give employment to two youngsters next year.

The motion from Cllr Rose was put toward town council on Wednesday, proposing that two young people be employed by the council under UK Government Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s kickstart job scheme.

Her motion received unanimous support though Cllr Jay Moore asked about whether staff would need to be DBS checked if they were to employ young people.

However, town clerk Arren Roberts confirmed the job opportunities would only be made to people above the age of 18.

Cllr Rosie Radford added her thoughts that any management of kickstart staff could be added to a future project manager job role.
