FACE coverings must be worn when buying a takeaway meal or a drink at fast food restaurants from tomorrow.

Tory Cabinet minister Brandon Lewis cleared up confusion over the new rules this morning and confirmed that customers after a quick sandwich from places Pret a Manger or McDonald's will also have to wear a mask.

Mr Lewis said: "If you are eating in, then you do not need a face mask.

"But if you are buying a sandwich and leaving, then you are treating it like a shop and you should be wearing a face mask."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced on July 14 that wearing masks or face coverings in supermarkets will be mandatory in England from this Friday.

People caught failing the new rules will face fines of up to £100.

The outlets where customers will have to wear a face mask at from tomorrow include supermarkets, shops, banks and takeaway outlets.
