A MAN who allegedly flashed a knife across his chest at drivers waiting at red lights will now face a trial.

John Smith, of Vicarage Road, Henley-on-Thames, is accused of being in possession of a kitchen knife on Bell Street on June 25.

It is alleged that at 8.20am, the 24-year-old crossed the road in front of two drivers who saw him move the knife from his pocket to his chest and under his arm.

Standing in the dock of Oxford Magistrates' Court yesterday, Smith – who was wearing jeans, a checked shirt and a fleece jacket – listened as his charges were read out.

He told the court: “I understand the charges, but I am not guilty.”

He is also accused of using threatening, abusive and insulting words to cause alarm on the same day to what it thought to be one of the drivers.

He has now been given unconditional bail until his case management hearing on July 24, ahead of a trial at Oxford Magistrates' Court.

The magistrate warned him that if he didn’t come back to the court at the right time on the right day he could be arrested and fined for breaching the only bail condition of attending the hearings.
