COWLEY Road baker Mahmoud Al-Hadad is giving away more than 60 kilos of sweet, sticky blackawa, and today is the last chance to get your hands on some!

Mr Al-Hadad, who runs Za'atar Palestinian bakery, is not charging his customers anything for the sweet treats – however he is asking every one to make a donation to Oxford’s coronavirus heroes.

Volunteers from Oxford Hub, which has helped support people across the city in lockdown, were stationed outside his shop yesterday and will be there again today.

Mr Al-Hadad has also been giving away entire meals for free to anyone who asks.

The offer is supposed to be for people who are struggling to feed themselves or their family, but he doesn’t ask for any proof of their need.

He said up to ten or 12 people were coming into his shop every day to get free food.

The 49-year-old said: “I don’t have to check anything: they come in, they can have whatever we have on the menu, then they go.

“After corona hit us, I looked at life in a different way – a more humble way, to be honest, because it has affected all of us.

“This is the time to change: if we don’t change now, we will never change in our entire life.”

The former company CEO, who was born in Egypt to Palestinian parents, previously worked as an accountant in London for 16 years.

He set up his bakery in what used to be Beetroot restaurant in 2018.
