Hampshire County Council has unveiled plans to name a road running through the former site of Basingstoke Town's football ground, 'Covenant Way'.
The authority intends to build a road through the Camrose Stadium, which was protected by a covenant signed by Lord Camrose in 1953.
It comes as planning permission has not yet been granted to turn the historic site on Winchester Road into a housing development by Basron Developers, the business of former club owner Rafi Razzak.
However, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council who owns part of the land is planning to give it to Hampshire County Council for free to build a road to help ease congestion around the area.
A spokesman for the HCC Notta Reilnom said: "We are delighted to be given the land for free by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
"The least we could do is name the road after a piece of the club's history - and what better way than paying tribute to the covenant, designed to protect the land until 2053."
However Mrs Reilnom added they would be interested in hearing from residents of Basingstoke about their thoughts about the road.
"If residents have other suggestions for what we should name the road we'd be very interested in hearing from them," she said.
