OXFORDSHIRE has four contenders in this year's British Kebab Awards.

The annual event, now in its eighth year, has released its shortlist for the 2020 ceremony.

Antep Kitchen in Cowley Road, which is now one of Oxford's best-rated restaurants on TripAdvisor, is up for best value restaurant.

Atalay's Kebab Van in Thame, which has won twice in previous years, is once again shortlisted for best kebab van.

It will be trying to regain its title from Ahmed's Bar B-Q in Oxford High Street, which won the category last year and has been shortlisted again for 2020.

Grove Kebab Van in Grove is also in the running for the same category.

Thousands of people across the UK nominated their favourites, which were narrowed down to a shortlist of 150, based on public votes, hygiene ratings, online reviews and social media support.

Finalists will be judged by a panel including MPs and food and drink industry representatives, and winners will be announced at a ceremony next month.

Public votes will also be taken into account, and customers can help their favourite finalist by submitting their vote here.

There are 15 awards on offering in categories ranging from best newcomer to best kebab van, as well as eight regional awards for best kebab restaurant.

Ibrahim Dogus, founder of the British Kebab Awards, said: "The kebab has firmly established itself as a Great British favourite, and this year's shortlist demonstrates its ever-greater diversity, with a wider range of variations than ever before.

"From twists on the classics, to new vegan varieties, we are proud to celebrate one of the nation's best-loved industries as it continues to grow in new and exciting ways."

Organisers of the event report that every day, more than 1.3 million kebabs are sold across Britain at more than 20,000 kebab outlets, bringing in £2.8bn per year.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan will be among the 1,200 guests at the award ceremony, along with more than 110 MPs and Lords.

It will take place in the ballroom of the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel in London.

Andrew Kenny, UK managing director of longstanding award sponsors Just Eat, said: "Not only do the shortlisted restaurants serve fantastic food, they also offer a vital source of local jobs, bring diversity to our high streets and make a significant contribution to the UK economy."
