LONDON Road was closed this evening after concerns were raised for a woman’s safety.
Police, firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene on the swing bridge over the Manchester Ship Canal at rush hour.
The incident was reported to the emergency services shortly after 5pm, with the A49 shut between the Morrisons supermarket and Fairfield Road as a result.
But the road has since reopened.
And police have thanked three Good Samaritans who came to the woman's aid and held her in order to stop her from falling from the bridge.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Earlier this evening, officers responded to reports of a distressed female on the wrong side of the swing bridge in Stockton Heath.
"Thanks to the courageous actions of three members of the public, who sprung into action and held her until officers could arrive.
"Another example of the brilliant sense of community and support in Warrington.
"We didn't get the details of two of the people who stayed to help, but we would like to say thank you.
"The lady is now in safe hands and receiving the help she needs."
