This live show by the legendary singer was called Lulu on Fire – and how true that proved.

The concert at the New Theatre Oxford was a celebration of her career and remarkable life as a performer, actress, songwriter and TV personality spanning over five decades.

It all started in 1964 when she was signed to Decca Records at the age of 15 and released her most iconic song which kick-started her long career.

That song was Shout, which reached number seven in the charts. And she started the show by singing it.

It was clear from the very start that, even at the age of 70, she hasn’t lost her unique, powerful, crackly voice we recognise her for today. We knew we were in for a great show from that moment on, from start to finish.

Lulu engaged the audience with assistance from her band. And to help tell her story there was a large LED screen at the back of the stage on which were shown images of pivotal moments in her life and career.

As the show went on, personal photos of people that had helped and inspired her, and those she had sung with over the decades, appeared. This made the songs she sang even more meaningful.

She took us through her marriage to Bee Gee Maurice Gibb, and her association with David Bowie who told her that her ‘girl next door’ look and powerful voice just didn’t go together. She and Bowie went on to sing a duet together called The Man Who Sold The World in 1974.

She sang many of her hits such as Boom Bang a Bang, with which she won the 1969 Eurovision song contest (that’s when we use to win); and the music from the film To Sir With Love. Not only did she sing the title song for the film, but the movie also marked the debut of her acting career, starring with Sidney Poitier.

Then there was the James Bond film theme for The Man with the Golden Gun and many, many, more.

The closing songs Relight My Fire (on which she sang with Take That on the original) and I’m Still Standing, had the audience up on their feet dancing.

Fans included one Graham Norton who was also on his feet enjoying the show in the stalls. The atmosphere was buzzing. She may have been doing this for 55 years but she has so much more to give.
