SPORT England and a district council are opposed to a county council plan to build a new car park on a field in Wallingford.

The county council wants to build the 64-space car park off St George’s Road, near the town centre. It would be used by Wallingford School staff if it is opened.

Currently, there is a shortfall of 21 car parking spaces against the county council’s guidance, the school says.

It had initially wanted to build more than 64 spaces because of a recent expansion but it has been cut back.

Sport England said it was opposed to the car park being built on the field because it has previously been used by an under 15s and under 16s football club. It is currently fenced off.

Crowmarsh Youth said it has used the site for football but its main ground, in Bull Croft Park, is nearby.

And Sport England said the loss has not been addressed, something that could affect up to 25 teams.

Another 10 people said they are opposed to the parking plan.

Wallingford Town Council is supportive of the proposal because it says the school needs more parking.

South Oxfordshire District Council said it is also opposed to the scheme. It said insufficient work has been done on what impact the car park would have on Wallingford’s Area Quality Management Area.

It also said too little work had been done to find out how much noise would be created. It added other effort has to be put in to find what impact there would be to a horse chestnut tree to the north east of the field.

The site of the former Wallingford Upper School has been listed since February 1988 and is nearby. It is Grade II listed and was build in about 1877. It is now used for housing.

A statement on the county council’s website said: “The proposed development would not result in any direct harm to the listed building itself and would not impact upon its architecture, however the application site forms an important part of the setting of the building and makes a positive contribution to the significance of the designated asset.

“However, between the proposed car parking and the listed building would be the existing road, where there is already parking, the weldmesh fence to the site and the proposed biodiversity enhancement area.”

Oxfordshire County Council’s planning committee will be asked to decide what happens to the plan next Monday.

That meeting will be held at County Hall in New Road, Oxford from 2pm.

Councillors will be given the option to give the plan their approval or dismiss it next Monday.

But South Oxfordshire District Council’s planning committee will make the final decision on the policy at a meeting over the next few months.
