OXFORD'S two MPs, the Lord Mayor and leader of Oxford City Council are due to speak today at a demonstration against the suspension of Parliament.

UPDATE: Full report from the protest today

It follows a huge local backlash to the government's plan, which is seen as a way to stop MPs blocking a no deal Brexit.

Campaign group Another Europe Is Possible has planned more than 30 #StopTheCoup protests in England, Scotland and Wales this weekend, to protest the proroguing of Parliament.

The Oxford rally has been organised by Oxford for Europe and Another Europe Is Possible in conjunction with various other groups.

More than 500 people have confirmed their attendance via Facebook.

Helen Mountfield QC, principal of Mansfield College in Oxford, will also speak at the event.

She was leading advocate for the People's Challenge, which successfully challenged the Prime Minister's power to trigger Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union without first obtaining statutory authority from Parliament.
