A PLAN for 93 homes that council officers warned would cause ‘gridlock’ if they went ahead has been refused.

Vale of White Horse district councillors agreed with officers’ recommendations that the new homes should not be built off Appleford Road in Sutton Courtenay.

They had been previously given planning permission in 2016.

The council said the development would not fit in with its current planning guidelines and worried it would cause far more traffic on roads nearby, including Culham Bridge.

That meant it would not have been sustainable, councillors were told.

They rejected the plan at a meeting on Wednesday in Wantage.

Residents were also opposed. Sutton Courtenay Parish Council said it was concerned the plan would have meant that extra traffic would have dogged ‘extremely busy roads…which are already over capacity’.

Oxfordshire County Council said it was concerned about the impact traffic might have on junctions in Culham and Sutton Courtenay.

It said: “At peak times queuing at the signalised Culham bridges may result in the blocking of the bridge and adjacent junctions to the north/the signalised junction of the A415 and to the south and the priority junction of Abingdon Road and Appleford Road.”
