THE banks of the River Thames will be filled this weekend with cheering crowds as one of Abingdon's biggest sporting events returns.

The Spring Head of the River rowing competition will feature 360 boats from across the UK racing 2,000 metres against the clock.

There will also be a barbecue, local beer, tea and cakes plus Morris dancing.

This year marks the return of the popular event after disappointment in 2018 when organisers Abingdon Rowing Club were forced to cancel due to unsafe river conditions after heavy rainfall.

Oxford Mail:

It was the second time in three years the event had been scrapped - after 2016’s race was also called off for the same reason. Before that it hadn’t been cancelled for more than 25 years and regularly attracts thousands of people.

The event is free to watch and there is paid parking available. It will be at Rye Farm Meadow, and along the Thames towards Culham weir, between 9.30am and 5pm.
