The council advises drivers to use alternative routes as part of the Oxford ring road is closed due to roadworks.

Resurfacing of the Garsington flyover in Cowley, above the roundabout near Oxford Retail Park, will require a combination of lane closures during the day (between 5am and 8pm) and complete closure of the bridge during the night (between 8pm and 5am).

Oxfordshire County Council said the work, which involves road resurfacing and replacement of expansion joints, will affect the entire stretch of the A4142 Eastern Bypass between Littlemore Roundabout and Horspath Road.

Congestion on the road was already building as of 7am this morning, and is expected to get worse during rush hour.

County councillor Yvonne Constance, cabinet member for environment, said: "The resurfacing and repair will no doubt be welcomed by anyone who uses the Eastern Bypass.

"We appreciate that the work will cause disruption but the short-term pain will be worth the long-term gain."

A diversion will be in place and drivers have been warned to expect delays.

A temporary 30mph speed limit will also be introduced to ensure the safety of the workers on site.

The first phase of works is due to finish on Friday, but a second phase - which will involve replacing 'expansion joints' - will run between March 25 and March 31.
