A YELLOW weather warning for fog in place over Oxfordshire has expired.

Drivers were warned to take care on the roads after the Met Office issued the warning overnight, which remained in place until 10am this morning.

The warning covered much of the south of England.

Oxford Mail:

Motorists were warned to expect slower journeys and delays to bus and train services due to poor visibility, according to the Met Office.

Those on the A41 near Bicester, heading towards Aylesbury, were urged to take particular care, following reports of a broken down van partially blocking a lane near Bicester Village.

Drivers were advised to avoid travelling if possible, but the Met Office released tips on how to stay safe in the fog:

  • Drive very slowly with dipped headlights, full-beam lights reflect off the fog causing a 'white wall' effect
  • Keep an eye on your speed, fog can give the illusion of moving in slow motion
  • Use fog lights, but remember to turn them off when the visibility improves
  • Don't hang on the tail lights of the car in front, rear lights can give a false sense of security
  • Watch out for freezing fog which is made of water droplets that freeze on contact with objects such as the pavement, road, car, etc. It can quickly form a layer of ice.
