AN ABINGDON charity which helps young people in challenging circumstances is advising them on how best to cope with social media.

The Abingdon Bridge, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, has set up the Social Media Anxiety Resilience Team (SMART) led by service manager Gary Hibbins.

The team goes into schools, colleges and youth groups where they offer advice to young people and encourage them to share their anxieties arising from their use of social media.

Mr Hibbins said: “We have clearly hit on a growing need.

“Young people report that they are less social than ever before; many young people are spending up to eight hours a day on their phones or tablets.

“Many of our referrals into our counselling services are young people who have had a negative experience using social media.”

The SMART programme is funded by county councillors from the Local Priority Fund. Visit theabingdonbridge.org.uk
