WALLINGFORD School pupils aimed to raise £10,000 for a local girl on a mission to take her first steps.
The whole school, along with Brightwell Primary – where Maeve Norfolk is in reception - joined the eight-mile sponsored walk yesterday.
The youngster, who has already attracted huge support from the local community, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 15 months and is unable to stand unsupported.
A life-changing operation and rehabilitation programme would cost £45,000, but nearly £35,000 has already been raised – meaning yesterday’s efforts could even mean the target is reached in the coming weeks.
Wallingford School headteacher Wyll Willis said: “The days when we put lessons to one side and come together as a school are always special. It was great to see the students enjoying something as a simple walk in each other’s company.
“To have a happy, healthy day together while helping a little girl take on the challenges Maeve faces is a privilege for all of us.”
The wider appeal is organised by the Tree of Hope Charity, but sponsored walk donations can be made via justgiving.com/fundraising/wallingfordschool
