WITNEY centre Henry Lamb broke his nose as they went down to a disappointing 14-8 defeat away to Maidenhead in South West 1 East on Saturday.

Lamb suffered the blow following a collision in the second minute of injury time, after a close match played on an artificial playing surface.

The visitors resisted early Maidenhead pressure and took the lead against the run of play when Lamb kicked a 15th-minute penalty, following an offside offence.

Despite having lock forward Matthew Webb yellow-carded for interfering with the opposition’s jumper in the lineout, Witney increased their lead before the break.

From the second of two attacks, Matt Clarke set up a try for full back Arron Lambourne, who forced his way over the line for a try to make it 8-0 at half-time.

In an error-strewn second half, Maidenhead closed the gap to 8-6 with two penalties from full back Michael Davies.

And Witney were then made to pay for their indiscipline after having prop Matt Calley yellow-carded.

While down to 14 men, Maidenhead scored a try through prop George Kingsley to take an 11-8 lead.

During the ten minutes of added time, Lamb broke his nose before Davies sealed the result with his third penalty, as Witney wasted several attacking opportunities.

Witney are next in action on November 7 when they host Newbury Blues.
