OXFORD United's hopes of securing a permanent deal for Conor McAleny are over following the striker's move to Fleetwood Town.

The former Everton youngster has signed a three-year deal with the U's Sky Bet League One rivals.

It is another dent to United's preparations for the new season following head coach Michael Appleton's departure earlier this week.

The U's made no secret of their intention to try to bring the 24-year-old back to the Kassam Stadium after a successful loan spell last season.

McAleny, who was released by Everton two weeks ago, scored ten goals, including two hat-tricks, in 18 games during his four months with United.

But the U's were always likely to face tough competition for his signature.

McAleny told Fleetwood's website: “I’m delighted, it’s a club on the up and I’m very excited to be a part of it.

“I know the manager, they are a good bunch of lads, the facilities are spot-on and it’s definitely the right place to be.”
