JAKE Wright has signed a new deal to stay at Oxford United.

The skipper was out of contract this summer, but has agreed to remain at the club for another two years.

Danny Rose and Max Crocombe have had their deals with the U’s extended, while promising youngsters Sam Long, Aidan Hawtin and Sam Humphreys have also been offered improved terms.

However, leaving the Kassam Stadium are Jon Meades, Will Hoskins, John Campbell, Josh Shama, Matt Bevans and Jeremy Balmy, who have all been told they will not receive new contracts.

The U’s are still in talks with goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown as well as Andy Whing, who is discussing a new role at the club, although he will not be offered a playing deal.

Wright has made more than 200 appearances for United since joining in 2009, and head coach Michael Appleton is delighted that his captain has committed his future to the club.

“Jake is a really good player as well as being a natural leader, on and off the pitch,” Appleton said.

“People maybe don’t see what an important role he plays behind the scenes, but he has the respect of everyone at the club as well as the players around him and we are very happy that he has committed his future here.

“He is a terrific defender, gives us balance because he is naturally left sided, and I am sure he will be an important player again for us next season.”

The club has taken up a one-year extension in Rose’s contract, while a similar two-year extension has been taken up with goalkeeper Crocombe.

They join Joe Skarz in next season’s squad after the left-back agreed a three-year deal last week.

“Danny Rose has shown a fantastic attitude and gives us options in midfield,” said Appleton.

“Max impressed everyone during his loan at Nuneaton.

“We have also offered Sam Long, Aidan Hawtin and Sam Humphreys longer contracts and that can only be good news for the future of the football club.”
