MICHAEL Appleton says Oxford United have to be creative while they continue to search for targets up front during the transfer window.

The U’s head coach is hoping to add two more forwards to the squad before September 1, but has found it difficult to bring in the right kind of player.

In the meantime, the priority is on getting the most out of the players already at the club.

And Appleton admits they could go a long way to answering the problem.

He said: “What we’ve got to do is be quite clever and creative to come up with a different solution at times.

“That might be right in front of our noses.

“It could be that Danny Hylton and Carlton Morris are the perfect partnership.

“They’ve had one full game together and we’ve created lots of opportunities.”

A move for Liam Walker remains a possibility, with Appleton believing the 26-year-old has made progress in settling his contract with Israeli club Bnei Yehuda.

But as a midfielder, he is not top of the U’s wish-list.

Appleton said: “I think we’re in a position to start talking if we need to, but we’ve got priorities we need to deal with in other areas first.

“Then we’ll address that one.”

  • OXFORD United’s game at Wycombe Wanderers in the spring has been brought forward 24 hours.

The U’s will now visit Adams Park on Good Friday, April 3.

It would be nice if Mr Appleton acknowledged the existence of the fans, he has so far not been engaging with the supporters. It was noted that Gary Waddock always faced the fans and applauded their support, but so far Appleton has not.
I think he needs to start to build a relationship with the crowd and show he appreciates them turning up.

Waving at the crowd doesn't win football matches, it doesn't worry me that Michael Appleton is not waving to me, I'd much rather he concentrates on the issues on the pitch !!

Yes, Ok, fair point. But it is a game funded by supporters, and ignoring them seems arrogant to me.

Danny Hylton and Carlton Morris should have been the two front strikers from day one. Why is it took three games to work that one out.
