RYAN Williams says there are no regrets over comments he made saying Oxford United could not miss out on the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

The Australian winger was interviewed at the end of February, when the U’s sat fourth in the table and with a ten-point cushion on the sides outside the top seven.

At the time he said: “We’re in a win-win situation I guess, because if we don’t get automatic promotion I don’t think we can slip up that much to not get in the play-offs.”

But a horrible run of form since then meant Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley ensured United cannot reach the play-offs with one game remaining.

Williams was reminded of his comments in a video clip of his quote which was doing the rounds on social media last week.

The Fulham loanee took it with good humour and stood by the comments at the time, admitting it showed just how far United have fallen in two months.

He said: “I wouldn’t have said it if it was controversial.

“I felt we were in a strong position to go and possibly win the league even.

“Obviously I don’t take it back.

“I think it’s good the fans are interacting with us like that.

“Some people might think it’s funny, but it’s not a laughing matter and is quite embarrassing.”

Williams took his tally for the season to seven goals by scoring United’s consolation on Saturday.

It was almost certainly his final appearance at the Kassam Stadium in a yellow shirt, win his loan from Fulham expiring this weekend.

The 20-year-old was disappointed to bow out on such a low note and struggled to explain why United had fallen apart.

He said: “We were flying so high in the middle of the season and somehow we’ve just let it slip.

“We couldn’t get out of the rut.

“Confidence plays a big part in football and when we went into the rut we couldn’t get out.

“When we thought we were out, say against Plymouth, then in the next game maybe we didn’t put in as much effort as we should have to clear ourselves further.

“I think the boys do try and give 100 per cent, sometimes other teams are just better and sometimes you can’t affect things like refereeing decisions, which have been a killer.”
