TOMORROW marks the 50th anniversary of Oxford United’s famous FA Cup quarter-final against Preston North End.
Temporary terracing was installed at the Manor Ground for a crowd of 22,750 – which remains the U’s record home gate.
By knocking out Blackburn Rovers a fortnight earlier, United became the first fourth tier side to reach the last eight.
The club notes in the programme, sent into the Oxford Mail this week by a U’s fan, said: “As this year’s ‘giant- killers’ we have set everyone agog with excitement.”

Tony Jones pulled one back, but United could not draw level, losing 2-1.
- The tie, played on February 29, set a home attendance record which still stands
