I won't let United down says Raynes
Michael Raynes says Oxford United can count on him during Jake Wright’s injury lay-off as he prepares to face leaders Chesterfield tomorrow.
The form of Wright and Johnny Mullins meant Raynes had not played a minute of competitive football this season before being thrust into the starting line-up for the 2-2 draw at Cheltenham last weekend.
Wright needed minor surgery to remove an abscess near his groin, handing the 25-year-old a run of games in the side.
The centre back admitted they were big shoes to fill, but has been doing extra work to make sure he can grasp the chance with both hands and give manager Chris Wilder a selection headache.
He said: “It’s been tough for me watching, but I knew I’d get an opportunity.
“I want to play and when I get an opportunity like this. I have to make it as hard as possible for the gaffer to make a decision on all three of us.
“Chesterfield will be a tough challenge and I’ve been working my backside off doing as much extra as I possibly can so when this opportunity came along I would be ready.”
The former Scunthorpe and Rotherham defender insists he has no complaints about being kept out of the side due to the form and ability of the pair in front of him in the pecking order.
He said: “Jake and Mulls have been outstanding.
“I take comfort from the fact the two centre halves in front of me are the best in the league in my opinion.
“They are the best footballing centre halves I’ve played with and are twice the players of some I’ve seen get moves to the Championship.”
Chesterfield are the only other unbeaten side in Sky Bet League Two and will arrive four points clear of the second-placed U’s tomorrow.
But Raynes is unfazed by the prospect of taking on the title favourites.
“You would rather be in games like this than sitting in mid-table where if you win or lose it doesn’t really matter,” he said.
“You want to be trying to get top spot. lLife is about trying to better yourself and being the best you can be.”
