Oxford United bowed out of the FA Youth Cup at the third round stage as they lost 3-1 at Barnsley on Tuesday night. After three failed attempts to stage the tie at Thame, United agreed to play at Oakwell and they took the lead on 24 minutes.

Callum O’Dowda was fouled inside the box and top scorer James Roberts netted the resulting penalty. Barnsley levelled after 40 minutes as McAuley Shillito steered home a rebound after a block by United keeper Eddie Cavanagh. After the break, Chris Allen’s side were out of luck when a Barnsley defender headed against his own crossbar in the 56th minute.

George Maris hit a post for the home side before Shillito made it 2-1 after 76 minutes. With United throwing men forward in search of a late equaliser, Omari Alexander-Salmon made it 3-1 to seal a fourth-round tie at home to Stevenage.
