KEMAR Roofe scored twice as Oxford United came from behind to brilliantly - and deservedly - beat Premier League side Swansea City in the Emirates FA Cup third round.

The visitors led through a razor sharp break and finish from Jefferson Montero, but United levelled on the stroke of half-time through Liam Sercombe's penalty.

Roofe scored twice in ten minutes at the start of the second half, but Bafetimbi Gomis quickly reduced the deficit.

There were still 25 minutes to play, but United stayed positive and had remarkably few nervy moments as they held firm to knock out a top-flight for the first time since beating Leeds United in 1994.

There was a surprise on the teamsheet, where Michael Appleton named an unchanged side.

Chris Maguire, who was due to be left out as part of his loan from Rotherham United, was given permission to play thanks to a late u-turn.

By contrast Swansea made ten changes, with only Jack Cork remaining from the side which had started at Old Trafford last weekend.

Montero blazed an early shot over from Marvin Emnes's cut-back, but United showed no signs of nerves.

They moved the ball well, with John Lundstram featuring heavily and pulling the strings.

He often looked for Maguire, who had a knack for finding space on he left flank.

On 16 minutes he cut inside and crossed for Ryan Taylor, whose flicked header was tipped over by Kristoffer Nordfeldt.

It began a bright spell for the hosts, roared on by the capacity crowd.

Nordfeldt, capped at senior level by Sweden, also saved from Roofe, who was in the wrong place at the next attack, blocking a shot from Sercombe.

Barring a couple of wild shots from Jonjo Shelvey, Swansea had created little, but midway through the half a moment of top-flight class opened the scoring.

Montero came off the left flank and played a sharp one-two with Marvin Emnes to go through, before coming up with an audacious flicked finish to beat Sam Slocombe.

The goal was out of the blue and United took a few minutes to recover, during which Shelvey curled a free-kick into the side netting.

But as the half wore on they rediscovered their rhythm and probed again.

Nordfeldt denied the lively Maguire and late in the half he came up with an excellent parry to keep out, of all people, Jake Wright.

The ball stayed in play and when it fell loose Alex MacDonald beat Kyle Bartley, who brought the winger down.

Referee Kevin Friend pointed to the spot, from where Sercombe hammered the penalty down the middle to send the sides in level at the break.

On the balance of play it was the least the underdogs deserved, but it rapidly got even better.

Four minutes after the restart Roofe picked up a pass from Taylor, cut inside and curled a stunning shot into the far corner from 20 yards.

Oxford Mail:

  • Chris Maguire was available to play thanks to a late agreement with parent club Rotherham United

It was the 14th goal of the season for United's top scorer - and No 15 arrived just ten minutes later.

The forward won a defensive header at a corner, launching a rapid counter-attack.

Maguire pushed forward and had the vision to spot Roofe sprinting through the middle.

His first touch took him clear and although Nordfeldt got something on his shot, the ball looped skywards before dropping under the crossbar.

United were in dreamland, but the two-goal cushion lasted just seven minutes.

Clever disguise from Cork on the edge of the box found Gomis and the former France international coolly finished from eight yards.

With a quarter of the game still to play there was plenty of time for the Premier League side.

It took a smart save from Slocombe with his legs to deny Montero after a quick break led by Shelvey 15 minutes from time.

But United did not retreat into their shells and try to run the clock down.

Instead they went looking for a fourth goal to kill the game and it took another good save from Nordfeldt to tip over a vicious shot from Callum O'Dowda, on as a substitute.

At the other end Johnny Mullins made a superb block to deny Gomis a good chance, but despite five minutes added on that was as close as Swansea came as United saw out the time to take their place in tomorrow's fourth round draw.
