Oxford United are looking to seal two new signings before pre-season training begins next week.

The U’s have made formal approaches to a pair of midfielders with Football League experience and are expecting answers from the duo, who are free agents, in the next few days.

It has been a quiet summer at the Kassam Stadium, with Sean Rigg the only player to join so far in the close season.

But United boss Chris Wilder is optimistic the squad will have more new faces by the time they get together for the start of pre-season on July 6.

He said: “We have a couple of offers in there and we’re just finding out if we can get them accepted.

“It’s a waiting game, hopefully in the next week or so we would like to get both players in for pre-season training.

“It’s come to the stage where they have to make decisions.”

Strengthening the middle of the park is now Wilder’s main priority, with little room for manoeuvre in other departments.

Defensively the only scope for change is likely to be in providing Damian Batt with competition at right back, and with Bristol Rovers’ move for James Constable appearing to go quiet, United have seven attackers.

The U’s manager said: “If you look at it Paul McLaren’s gone, which frees that area up, and Asa (Hall)’s left as well.

“At the moment we’ve got Peter Leven, Adam Chapman, Andy Whing and Simon Heslop in there but we ran with five or six midfielders in the squad last season.”

And with pre-season training looming, the transfer market is expected to intensify.

Wilder said: “Speaking to a lot of people it feels like it’s just starting to speed up now.

“Players are looking to finalise their options before pre-season starts – every club’s back at about the same time and we’d like a couple of new players to be in with us.”

Chris Wilder has to operate within a tight budget. He will no doubt do the best possible. Until OUFC can buy their home, hands are tied. This is one reason why the youth policy is crucial from now on.

Benkiu: this is OLD news, revealed at Fans Forum some weeks ago - almost certainly OM reported then. All to do with service charges that were underestimated - FK only applying terms of contract. At least they are TALKING now - and if London Welsh can sort out their row with Premiership we may have somebody to share the rent with.

The wheels have fallen off at Oxford - a season of doom and gloom and struggle. With you first two months of the season and the games you have be prepared for alot of negativitiy from you Yellow fans.
As for all the idiots who keep stating we are spending money like its going out of fashion it takes along time to sink into you lot. As last season the majority of players we have signed are free transfers and we have a wage restriction on what we pay which is why we didnt sign Holmes. We have put a budget in place which we can affford, bigger sponsors, more season ticket sales, revenue for some of the players being sold.

Idiots on your forum are very jealous of our success last season so all i can say is why dont you worry about your own team where players are leaving like its going out of fashion as they see no desire to move forward from your club.

Enjoy your struggle in L2 next season.

Hmmm - you've blown it there Bigchet - yet another who berates others coming on this site - then low and behold you admit to doing the same on the Adver site, but just to scared to leave your calling card.
As a point, the item you mention about LG being out of favour was a misunderstanding between the two posters and if you when you are back on the Adver site again follow the thread and you'll see for yourself.

My god you need something to talk about on here if its only having a pop at us, as there is not much going on with OU at the moment, very stagnant.

It wouldn't surprise me if OUFC are in for Smith and Cox, but I hope that neither sign for them...

Ive got an amazing idea why dont oufc give some of the youth team players a chance as we spend tens of thousands on the centre of excellence. Who and how many years ago did anyone from the youth team get a fair crack of the whip lets face it they would probably have a bit more about them than those in yellow the end of last season. As for selling are leading scorer for the past three years just the thought of selling constable for any price at the moment would secure oufc s fate back to the conference, where on earth would the goals come from im struggling to even name one other current player in the squad who even looks like scoring 5 or more goals in a season........ atleast beano carrys a threat rarely misses the target and i back him to bang a fair few goals next year. Without him im sorry to say but we are average at best just my opinion as a lifelong fan, bring inthe young talent and keep beano.
