OXFORD United will attempt to put their Emirates FA Cup exit behind them and boost hopes of a play-off push when they visit Charlton Athletic tonight.

The clash at the Valley was rearranged due to the U’s cup run, which ended with a dramatic 3-2 defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

This is one of up to three games they have in hand on their rivals in Sky Bet League One.

Full back Phil Edwards knows the importance of cashing in while the most of the division look on, as the players attempt to forget their Boro frustrations.

He said: “We can’t dwell on the past.

“Saturday was a great occasion. We didn’t get the result we wanted but we have to move on and look forward to Charlton.

“There’s no point having the games in hand without getting points from them.

“Performances start to go out the window a bit – it’s all about results now so we can get close.”

The league results on Saturday provided the silver lining for a U’s side left gutted by the cup exit.

Only one side, who started the day in the top half, won at the weekend, so United can jump up two places to tenth with a win.

Ryan Ledson said: “The results went for us on Saturday so the gap’s not impossible.

“We need to press them and get after them. That’s when we look at our best.”

While his side pushed a Premier League side all the way at the weekend, head coach Michael Appleton knows it does not mean a return to League One action will be straightforward.

He said: “We’re back to reality I suppose.

“Charlton are a good side and are in a position of transition with Karl (Robinson) only being there for a couple of months.

“You can start to see a few things in terms of what they’re trying to do which is similar to how he played at MK Dons. “It will be a tough game. They’re a big club with good players.”

United have no new fitness concerns, with Toni Martinez having recovered from Saturday’s calf injury.

Charlton have Nathan Byrne available again after suspension, but are without Ahmed Keshi (Achilles), Jason Pearce (groin) and Harry Lennon (hamstring).
